These figures count the facilities tracked in the Veligraph register for each local government area (LGA), not every facility that exists. A gap here means no secondary or tertiary facility is on record for that LGA. That can mean a real gap in hospital care, or a facility the register does not hold yet.
Secondary facilities are general hospitals and their equivalents; tertiary facilities are teaching hospitals, federal medical centres and specialist hospitals. Closed and non-functional facilities are excluded. Beds and staff are the totals reported to the register.
